Lake Michigan is home to some real beauties, and we're targeting the cream of the crop. Let's break down what you might find at the end of your line:
Rainbow Trout (Steelhead): These guys are the acrobats of the lake. Known for their spectacular jumps and runs, Steelhead will test your skills and provide an adrenaline rush like no other. They average 5-10 pounds, but don't be surprised if you hook into a 15+ pounder! Spring and fall are prime times for these silver bullets, but summer can produce some great action too.
Coho Salmon: Often called "silver salmon," Cohos are known for their aggressive strikes and tasty fillets. They typically range from 2-5 pounds, making them a great fish for anglers of all levels. These fish are most active in the cooler months, but we can still find them in early summer, especially in the deeper, cooler waters.
Chinook Salmon: Also known as "King Salmon," and for good reason. These are the heavyweights of Lake Michigan, often tipping the scales at 15-30 pounds. Landing a Chinook is a true test of an angler's skill and patience. They're most active in late summer and early fall, but we can find some early runners in June.
Brown Trout: These are the crafty ones. Brown Trout are known for their wariness and fighting ability. They love to hang out near structure and can put up a dogged fight when hooked. While they average 2-5 pounds, trophy browns in the 10+ pound range are not uncommon in Lake Michigan.
Lake Trout: The true natives of Lake Michigan, Lake Trout are built for the cold, deep waters. They're known for their stamina - when you hook into a big one, be prepared for a battle! These fish can live for decades and grow to impressive sizes, with 10-20 pounders being fairly common. June is a great time to target them as they often move into shallower waters to feed.
Lake Michigan's fishing scene is always changing, but this season we're seeing some exciting trends. The Chinook Salmon have been showing up earlier than usual, with some anglers already landing 20+ pounders in May. Lake Trout fishing has been on fire, with consistent catches in the 8-12 pound range. And don't sleep on the Brown Trout - we've been finding some beautiful specimens hugging the shoreline structure. Remember, part of the fun of fishing is that every day is different. We'll use our local knowledge and latest reports to put you on the best bite of the day.
There's something special about fishing Lake Michigan that keeps folks coming back year after year. Maybe it's the thrill of battling a monster King Salmon or the peaceful early morning as we head out to our favorite spots. Or perhaps it's the camaraderie that develops when you're all working together to land that big one. Whatever it is, we've seen friendships forged and family traditions started right here on our boat. And let's not forget the bragging rights - there's nothing quite like showing off a photo of that trophy catch to your buddies back home!

Brown trout are the crafty characters of Lake Michigan. These fish usually range from 5-10 pounds but can grow much larger. They're often found near shore, especially around rocky areas or near river mouths. Spring and fall offer the best action, but we catch them year-round. Anglers love browns for their elusive nature and the challenge they present. They're known for their sudden, powerful runs and tendency to wrap your line around obstacles. To improve your chances, try trolling or casting with minnow-imitating lures close to structure. A local secret is to fish at night or on overcast days when browns are more active. Keep your drag set light and be ready to adjust quickly – these fish are masters at finding ways to shake the hook.
Chinook salmon, or "kings," are the heavyweights of Lake Michigan. These bruisers can top 30 pounds, though 15-20 pounders are more common. They prefer cooler, deeper waters, often hanging out near underwater structures or drop-offs. Late summer into fall is prime time, as they stage for their spawning run. Anglers prize kings for their hard-fighting ability and sizeable fillets. When hooked, they'll make powerful runs and test your gear to the limit. To target them, we often use large spoons or cut bait rigs trolled deep. A local tip: watch for bait balls on your fish finder – kings are often lurking nearby. Be ready for a workout when you hook one of these lake monsters. It's not uncommon for a battle with a big king to last over 30 minutes.
Coho salmon are a blast to catch on Lake Michigan. These silver bullets usually weigh 8-12 pounds and are known for their aggressive strikes and aerial acrobatics. We typically find them in the top 30 feet of water, often near temperature breaks or bait schools. Late spring through early fall is prime time, with peak action in June and July. Anglers love cohos for their hard-fighting spirit and excellent table fare. When hooked, they'll make blistering runs and leap repeatedly. To up your odds, try trolling with flashy spoons or J-plugs that mimic baitfish. A local secret is to look for diving seagulls – they'll often lead you right to feeding cohos. Remember to set your drag light, as these fish can easily snap light line with their sudden bursts of speed.
Lake trout are the true natives of Lake Michigan. These deep-water dwellers can grow massive, with 15-20 pounders being common and some topping 40 pounds. You'll find them in the coldest parts of the lake, often suspended over deep basins or near underwater structures. Summer and early fall are prime seasons when they come to shallower waters to feed. Anglers target lakers for their size and the unique challenge of deep-water fishing. They're known for their dogged fights, often staying deep and using their weight to their advantage. To hook into one, we typically use heavy jigs or large spoons fished near the bottom. A local trick is to use scented baits – lake trout have an excellent sense of smell. Be patient when fighting these fish, as it can take time to bring them up from the depths.
Rainbow trout are a highlight of Lake Michigan fishing. These beauties typically range from 2-8 pounds and put up an acrobatic fight when hooked. You'll find them in cooler waters, often near drop-offs or structure. Spring and fall are prime seasons, but we can catch them year-round. Rainbows are popular for their tasty pink flesh and the challenge they present. They're known to make sudden runs and leap clear out of the water. To boost your chances, try using small spinners or flies that imitate their natural prey. A local trick is to fish just after a light rain when insects are washed into the lake. Keep your line tight and be ready for some airborne action when you hook into one of these lively fish.
